    Prime numbers on a number line appear only at certain whole-number positions: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, and so on. They do not fill the line evenly, and they do not include 0, 1, negative numbers, fractions, or decimals under the standard elementary definition of prime numbers.

    On a number line, prime numbers sit at specific integer positions greater than 1. The first prime number is 2, followed by 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, and 23.

    If the whole numbers are marked in order, the prime positions are the numbers that cannot be divided evenly by any positive whole number other than 1 and themselves.

    2 is the first prime number and the only even prime number.

    Why Prime Numbers Do Not Have Equal Spacing

    Prime numbers do not appear at equal intervals on the number line. The distance between two consecutive prime numbers is called a prime gap.

    Prime Gap Formula

    gn = pn+1 − pn

    Here, pn and pn+1 are consecutive prime numbers.

    For example, the gap between 2 and 3 is 1. The gap between 3 and 5 is 2. The gap between 7 and 11 is 4. After the first gap between 2 and 3, prime gaps between consecutive primes are even because every prime greater than 2 is odd.

    Reading a Prime Number Line

    A prime number line is easiest to read when only whole-number positions are considered. A mark at 7 can be prime, but a mark at 7.5 cannot be prime because prime numbers are defined using whole numbers.

    Common Mistake

    A number in the form 6n − 1 or 6n + 1 is only a prime candidate. It still may be composite. For example, 25 equals 6 × 4 + 1, but 25 is not prime because it is divisible by 5.
